When 'We Carry That' Means 'We Don't Know That': A Buyer's Tale of Bearings, Stepper Motors, and Honest Expertise

Last October I ordered a spherical roller bearing and a stepper motor on the same day. One was a maintenance replacement for the conveyor line. The other was for an Arduino-based positioning rig our engineering intern was building. Two completely different products, two completely different worlds. And I wanted to make it a single order. Standard buyer instinct—consolidate purchases, save on freight, one invoice.

It took me four days—or rather, closer to five once the spec review came back—to realize I'd been asking the wrong question.

The Surface Problem: Sourcing a Bearing and a Motor
